Newton Hall – Great Dunmow

Louis de Soissons have designed a new single dwelling located within the historic walled garden structure of Newton Hall in Great Dunmow

Newton Hall’s Walled Garden is located within the curtilage of an accompanying Grade II Listed Manor House and was built within the mid-19th Century.

The house sits within the sunken footprint of an existing tennis court, utilising the existing levels of the site to create a building to be ‘discovered’, predominantly hidden by the historic walls and sited within a landscape that enveloped it. With the strong presence of a weathered texture to the Corten Steel within the roof framing and areas of the facade providing a complimentary relationship to the aged red brick, the transparency of the glazing offers a striking contrast. Planning was permitted for the scheme in Spring 2022.

“Design was key to achieving consent on this sensitive project within the walled garden of the Grade II Listed house Newton Hall. Louis de Soissons worked collaboratively with all stakeholders, with a very reactive and enthusiastic approach to each stage of the process. We are very pleased with the outcome and look forward to working with the team again.”
